Left unchecked, the discomfort feeds the things that lead to misalignment between actions, creating a loop.
A way to dissolve the discomfort is to trust yourself (or, more precisely, to do the things that generates trust in yourself).
But what happens when even the trust to do the things to build the trust is lacking?
As captured in the piece, From Anxiety to Assurance, it's not so much that you don't trust yourself—trusting yourself isn't something you "do". It is that the trust simply isn't there. The very thing you expect to stir in order to initiate change happen is absent.1
The thing to do in the absence of trust is to recognize hope.2
Anxiety arrives from unattended or unresolved dissatisfactions. To recognize hope is to turn toward what lies at the opposite end of those dissatisfactions. To do so is to come upon the values that inform who you are.
Say the thing bringing dissatisfaction and worry is inaction and neglect of the behaviors perceived to be needed for progress. The dissatisfaction is indicative of your value for action and for devotion to activities needed for progress. In such as case, the solution becomes to recover—to take back the reins and step back into delivering actions.3
Notes:
- You'll notice the language adopted for this piece to be somewhat abstract in tone. That is to capture the reality of what you might find when you observe your place in the world. Right now, you might think in terms of "I am the master of my fate", and through this lens quips like "Trust yourself" or "Have hope" makes sense. But when you recognize that the vast happenings of all that you experience happen beyond the scope of your agency, it becomes important to, at least, make a distinction between what lies within it and what lies beyond.
- Keep in mind that the quip isn't to "have hope" or "hold on to hope", but to recognize hope. Because, like trust, hope isn't something you do. It can be helpful to see trust and hope as different phases of the same thing, the same way ice and steam are different phases of the same thing.
- Use (the philosophy of having) protocols to take back the reins.
