Why Android Will Serve You Better

It might sound sacrilegious (in some circles), but an Android device will serve you better than an iOS device.

Not only is an Android packed with features that are missing on iOS, it doesn't force itself on you. Or, at least, its way of supporting you to get things done isn't as rigid as you will find with iOS.

Take these three features:
  • Multi-window
  • Floating window
  • Display over apps.
These features alone mean you can be flexible with being productive.

At low points, you can slide a semi-transparent tray over the current app you are using to reveal, trigger and overlay widgets or apps that help you build momentum. Your iOS device would require complete switching of apps—a demand that most often feeds, rather than defuse, resistance.

Say you are on your couch and the I-Don't-Feel-Like-Doing-Anything or I-Don't-Know-What-To-Do feeling is upon you. One easy thing to do is to pick your Samsung phone to open the apps and pages you need to write and to change the state of your current environment (perhaps, through playing of music). One swipe, and you are in front of key tools:
  • Blank page - for purging the mind of tasks and thoughts.
  • In-basket - for receiving and holding new thoughts.
  • Today's Priorities page - to give you an sense of what to do.
  • Momentum Path page - to allow in-the-moment planning and deciding of what to execute now to generate and build momentum.
  • YTMusic or Spotify - for when hijacking you from yourself is paramount or you just feel like listening to music.
  • Timer - for viewing a countdown, to distill the feeling that an end to whatever a happening right now is nigh.
  • List of timers page - to present timers of different contexts for quick play.
It might seem like a lot but the point is having quick and easy access to the tools that move you and help you cut through resistance. Some moments with resistance will require all the tools; some will not. But you want to be ready.

Another crucial feature you will find in an Android is the ability to delegate administrative powers to an app. It is as though there is recognition you will not always have the will/strength/power to doing certain things at certain moments, so it offers you the opportunity to delegate those things.

The Freedom App, for example, keeps you free from distractive apps. You can grant it administrative rights to prevent you from deleting it from your phone, for moments where the will to stay away from distractive apps is non-existent. You can't do that on your iOS device.

Of course, your preference for which phone to use boils down to how you are wired. The customizability of an android device may feel too chaotic, and your preference may be the straight forward offering of an iOS device. In other words, "serve you better" depends on what you would like to be served.

But with all the dust raised from tech wars about which device is better, it is easy to remain blind to what actually matters: utility. The idea of "the better choice" in this context is mostly arbitrary; the non-arbitrariness created by those who would rather make a competition out of everything. You can own both an Android phone and an iOS phone, and make the most of what each one has to offer. In doing so, you might just find that, while both deliver great offerings, for situations that demand flexibility, an Android device will serve you better.
